Issey – School Learning Dog

We are delighted to introduce Issey our School Learning Dog in training who will be based in the Learning Support Department from September 2017.

Issey is a F1 Cockapoo who has been chosen for her gentle, placid and biddable nature.

Once Issey has completed her basic puppy training at 8-10 months old, she will join a 2-year training programme to become a certified Learning Support School Dog with the charity Dogs Helping Kids.

She will be trained to the very highest standard to ensure that she is able to work safely with pupils and to contribute to school life as much as possible.  She will be trained and assessed in four key roles:

  • The classroom
  • Listening/Reading
  • Reward
  • Therapy

As her training continues, Issey will work with pupils as a reading motivator and listener, as well as providing pastoral support and carrying out therapeutic work for children who may benefit from this.

The welfare of Issey and the Health and Safety of all pupils is paramount and as such a risk assessment has been put in place. When Issey is not in school she is our much loved family pet living at home with Head of Prep School Learning Support Mrs Katie Wood.
