| The Truro-based all girls school beat its own outstanding record set last year with an even greater number of top scores – 45% of exams taken were passed with the top, A, grade and 71% with either A or B. Early indications also show that the number of points scored by each candidate was even higher than last year too.
One talented pupil, Jennifer Hamilton, scored the highest mark possible in all her English literature papers – 600 out of 600. She will be continuing her education at Worcester College, Oxford, in the autumn reading English. Jennifer also scored A grades in her two other subjects, History and Chemistry.
“I enjoyed taking the exams but I’m the least confident person ever, so I was very relieved today,” said Jennifer.
Other high fliers at the school who achieved A grades in all subjects were former head girl, Emily Hotton, who will be studying medicine at Bristol University; former deputy head girl, Amy Smith, who has a place at the University of Bath to study mathematics and Laura Snapes who is set to study journalism at Falmouth.
“I can’t believe it!” said an exuberant Emily Hotton. “I am going to Bristol University to study medicine; it’s just amazing and thanks to all the teachers.”
Emily’s mum, was just as delighted, she said: “This school has been worth every penny, everything this school has done has been brilliant. Emily works really hard but the staff are so supportive.”
Michael McDowell, the school’s headmaster, said that almost every girl had achieved the results she needed for her first choice university.
“There are a lot of happy students here today and they deserve it. At Truro High success is always a team effort – a huge amount of hard work and dedication on the part of the students plus the expertise and support of a very professional staff,” said Mr McDowell.
“We have the capacity to work a timetable around the girls’ chosen subjects offering a wide and diverse range of subjects so they can all follow their chosen career path.
“This year we have girls leaving us to study everything from medicine, English and architecture to mathematics, civil engineering and broadcast journalism.”
One pupil, Katie Newton exceeded her own expectations to achieve three B grades and a place at Exeter University to study bio-sciences. But like many of her classmates her happiness was tinged with a tiny bit of sadness.
She said: “I can’t believe I’ve done so well, I can’t stop bouncing. This is such an amazing school, but I am going to miss it, especially my friends.”
As well as the excellent A-level results Truro High also achieved some encouragingly high AS level results – the exams taken half-way through the A-level course as a guide to progress.
“It’s been a noisy morning with a lot of screaming,” explained the school’s deputy head, Fiona Matthew. “But that’s the kind of noise we like to hear on an occasion like this, happy girls celebrating their success!” |
