Our School

Truro High School comprises approximately a Nursery of 20 children, a Prep School of 80, a Senior School (Years 7-11) of 250 and a Sixth Form of 70. We have boys in the Nursery. From September 2010, boys will be able to progress into Reception class in order to complete their Foundation Years' education.

All of our students are co-located on the same campus. This allows the older girls to take up positions of responsibility within the Prep and Nursery Departments while the younger girls and boys enjoy the benefits of senior school facilities and a fine group of older girls as role models.

The Nursery provides the perfect first-steps for both boys and girls. Situated in a purpose-built building with an extensive and well-equipped play area, it is hugely popular with both local families and those further afield. It was recently inspected and was rated OUTSTANDING in every possible area. Children can either attend for morning sessions (which include lunch) or all day sessions. Government vouchers are accepted from the term after your child is 3 years old but please note that these, whilst helping considerably, will not cover the total fees. From September 2010, the Reception class is to be co-located with the Nursery yet in their own dedicated learning space. They will still enjoy all the facilities of the Early Years Foundation yet spend special time each week with and within the Prep School so that they are fully prepared for Prep 1 and beyond.

The Pre-Prep and Prep School is located immediately adjacent to the Senior School. In fact, you simply go through a door and there you are! This means that the younger members of our school enjoy all the facilities normally only offered to a Senior School - the astro turf, the indoor heated swimming pool, a dedicated Sick Bay, the netball/tennis courts etc. Furthermore, they have daily contact with the older girls not only in assembly but in the dining room too. It really is heart-warming to see our Seniors playing with the younger ones too - without too much pestering! Prep 6 girls are granted automatic transfer into the Senior School and, from the Spring term, start to enjoy their lessons around the Senior School campus. This means there are no 'wobbly' moments about going into the Senior School in Year 7 and, furthermore, they are even better equipped to act as guides for those girls who join us into Year 7 from other schools.

The Senior School is busy, challenging and very positive indeed. New girls are quickly bought on board and before you know it they are dashing around the place going to clubs, laughing with their friends and building easy, happy relationships with the staff. Many new girls remark on these relationships and can't quite believe that we are all 'batting on the same side' here at Truro High. We don't like a 'them and us' environment. After all, communication is the key and the staff encourage the girls to participate, to question, to dig that bit deeper. As well as a full academic curriculum, the girls will get involved in a huge range of extra-curricular activites, all of them designed to stretch the mind, the body and sometimes the patience! Activities range from Ten Tors to Lace-Making, from Amnesty International to Jazz Band and from Debating to Water Polo. As girls progress through the school there will be increased opportunities to take on leadership roles and to really find out what they are most passionate about.

The Sixth Form, whilst taking lessons in the main school, enjoys its own Sixth Form Centre. It's part of the school but it definitely isn't like school. Yes, you need to go to Registration but your private study periods are your own to fill. Now is the time to learn to manage your own time, workload and social life, in a lightly-structured, progressive environment. The teaching in small groups is second to none, the friendships you build on at this stage will last you for life, and you will feel fully prepared to go to University or into work at the end of your two years. Because the group is fairly small (approx 70) there are masses of opportunities for you to take a really active role in helping to lead the school be it as a Head of House, Prefect, Librarian, Games Captain etc. Add to this the specific and well-honed expertise of your Sixth Form tutor who will guide your next steps (and not least your search for and application to appropriate courses at university) then you have much to look forward to and enjoy beyond school. And the fact that so many of our Old Girls return to school - often just before Uni starts each term, or to show off a new baby, or to share the news of a job promotion, only goes to show that the relationship between Sixth Form and School is fond, interested and lasting.
