14 May 2012 / HIGH SCHOOL GIRL MAKES TOP 25 IN NATIONAL LITERARY COMPETITION

A pupil at Truro High School has reached the final 25 in her age group of Radio 2's 500 WORDS literary competition.

13-year-old Amber Thomson, from Newquay, entered the competition, fronted by Chris Evans, which saw her piece chosen from 74,000 entries.

"I saw the poster with Chris Evans' huge grin on it outside the school's senior library and thought the opportunity of winning his height in books was so tempting that I had to enter," said Amber. "My piece is called The Gravedigger's Son and is a tribute to Charles Dickens. My English teacher, Mr Rendall, talked about Dickens and how 2012 is his 200th birthday so I borrowed a copy of Great Expectations and read the beginning which involves the gravediggers and went on from there really."

A celebrity children's author panel, including Dame Jacqueline Wilson, Charlie Higson, Lauren Child, Andy Stanton and David Walliams, have judged the finalists from two age groups, 10-13 year olds and 9 and under, and the six medal winners will be announced live on Chris Evans' breakfast show at the Hay-on-Wye Literary Festival on Friday 1st June.

Amber said: "We are going to see the David Walliams interview with Chris Evans the day before and then we have had invitations to the show for the final. We go to the Hay Festival for our family holiday but getting this far in the competition just makes it extra special, exciting and nerve-wracking all at the same time!"

Caroline Pascoe is the headmistress at Truro High School. She said: "Amber's achievement in the 500 WORDS competition is just too exciting for words - forgive the pun! Amber has done brilliantly and, whatever the outcome, she should be justifiably proud of herself. I'll be tuning in to hear the results on the 1st June!"

An audio version of Amber's piece, read by a professional BBC actor, is available on the 500 WORDS website http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/500words/2012/stories/

Ends May 2012
