14 May 2012 / HIGH SCHOOL FENCER WINS SILVER MEDAL IN OLYMPIC VENUE

Competing in the London 2012 Olympic fencing venue last week, Truro High School's international sabre star, Teresa Norejko, won a silver medal.

Teresa, 17, was competing in both the individual and team events at the 2012 UK School Games. To complement her team medal, she also finished sixth in the individual sabre class.

Teresa's individual competition began with five convincing victories in her poule which saw the sixth form student ranked 4th as she entered the elimination rounds. She continued to fight her way through to the last eight where she was eventually beaten into 6th position by a fellow Truro Fencing Club member.

The following day, Teresa represented Wales in the team event. After a tough match against Scotland, which they won 45-44, the four Welsh team members met England in the final, only just losing 45-43.

This year's UKSG were held at various London 2012 venues, partially to test them for suitability. The fencing was held at ExCeL London - an international exhibition and convention centre, which is where the Olympic fencing events will take place. It's situated in the heart of the Olympic community in Docklands, south east London.

Teresa's mum, Maria Norejko, said: "Competing in an Olympic venue was an awesome experience for Teresa. She really enjoyed it and fenced incredibly well, particularly in the team competition when she managed to beat the fencer who knocked her out of the individual event.

"The timing of the games was a bit of an issue because Teresa had her first AS level exam only a few days after the competition but, as ever, staff at Truro High were magnificently supportive and understanding."

Teresa will be back at ExCel London for the Olympic fencing events this summer after being selected as one of 24 Young Games Makers. She will be responsible for assisting competitors and ensuring they have everything they need to compete.

Headmistress of Truro High School and former British Olympian, Caroline Pascoe, said: "Once again Teresa has made us all extremely proud - not just of her outstanding sporting prowess achieving such excellent results at the UK School Games, but also in being selected as a Young Games Maker. It's an honour and privilege to have been invited to fulfill the role, which I know she fully appreciates, and I'm confident she will prove as great an ambassador for Britain at the Olympics as she is for this school."
