16 July 2012 / SPECIAL DAY FOR PUPILS

The first was for Prep School girls and their parents and, far from being a formal affair, was a memorable celebration of all that has happened over the last 12 months. The whole thing was written by departing Year 6 students, with each girl taking her turn at the microphone in a highly entertaining presentation that included photos. A wide range of prizes were then awarded by Truro High Headmistress Caroline Pascoe before the Year 6 pupils made a highly emotional exit from the hall. Most will be back in September to start Year 7.

The second event, for the Senior School, took place in Truro Cathedral. Guest of honour was Claire Smith, a career diplomat who has worked all over the world and who, in her role as Political Counsellor for the British High Commission in Islamabad, was involved in negotiating with the Taleban when an Afghan plane was hijacked on its way to Stansted airport in February 2000. Following the distribution of prizes, she told a packed audience of girls and their parents to disregard negativity and to define themselves not by their gender but by what they aspired to do.

"I was advised in the hijack situation that the Taleban won't talk to a woman or, if they do, they won't take you seriously," she said. "I did not define myself as a woman, but as the senior political officer - the person in the High Commission with the most extensive experience of dealing with hijacks and thus the best person for the job. The Taleban officials did talk to me and we resolved the hijack."

A formal vote of thanks was given by recently elected Head Girl Amy Chandler. Deputy Head Girls Tess Norejko and Hannah Pearce did readings, Year 11 pupil Maddie Wilshire performed her own GCSE composition ‘The Sad Man of Averey Road' and the school choir sang ‘Cantique de Jean Racine' and ‘Laudamus Te, Gloria'.

Ends July 2012
