22 October 2010 / HIGH SCHOOL FENCING CHAMPION FIGHTING FOR BRITAIN

As fellow students at the top performing Truro-based school are enjoying half-term 15-year-old Teresa, whose family home is in Llandovery, Wales, will be flying out to Meylan, France, to fence for her country in the Under 17 International in the girls' sabre section.

Less than a week later Teresa will be off to Madrid in Spain, where she has been selected to represent Great Britain - her 21st GBR cap - in the Junior Women's Sabre Under 20 age group - a massive achievement reflecting her recent competition successes.

Before these two international competitions, Teresa will also be competing for Truro Fencing Club as part of the Under 20 Years' squad at Newcastle, aiming to improve her national ranking.

Teresa's proud mum, Maria, said: "We had thought the bulk of her extremely busy fencing season was coming to an end and Teresa would be able to concentrate on training, school GCSE course work and hopefully some music practice, but we're very excited she continues to be selected for the British team.

"We are so grateful to Truro High School staff for the unstinting support and assistance they provide with Teresa's very busy schedule. We particularly appreciate that, as a boarder, she has been given a single room which allows her to do her homework before school and get to bed incredibly early when she's exhausted."

Maria also explained that there are three major tournaments remaining - one in November plus international events in Germany in December and London in January, for which Teresa may be selected.

Former British Olympian and Truro High School Headmistress, Caroline Pascoe, said: "We are happy and well equipped to provide Teresa with all the support she needs to continue her fencing as well as her academic success. She has outstanding talents and it is a pleasure and privilege to play a part in her achievements."
