21 February 2014 / WIZARD OF OZ COMES TO TRURO HIGH

Girls from the age of eight to eighteen are busy rehearsing, building sets, creating props and making costumes for Truro High School's production of ‘The Wizard of Oz' which will be performed from 5th to 7th March.

Regarded as the most widely retold and reinvented American fairy tale of all time, the story focuses on the adventures of a young girl named Dorothy Gale who is swept away from her Kansas home in a cyclone and ends up in the strange, amazing world of Oz.

The role of Dorothy is being played by sixteen year old Ceinwen Morgans, from Helston, the Tin Man by fifteen year old Emily Elwell-Deighton, from Falmouth, the Scarecrow by thirteen year old Savannah Hall from Truro and the Lion by seventeen year old Megan Tamblyn from Truro.

Backstage, students are hard at work on artistic creations that include the wizard's all powerful beast - described in the script as being somewhere between a giant cold germ, a tyrannosaurus rex and something from the Macy Parade - a giant cauldron, a rainbow and a dragon. Pupils Sophie Laws and Beth Richards have also been choreographing numbers that include the Jitterbug Dance.

"The rehearsals are going very well and everyone involved either on stage or off is doing their best to make this a show to remember," said Head of Drama Ian Tutin who is directing the production. "The stage version is based on the book that Frank Baum wrote in 1900 and, I think, maintains his original sense of fun. There are some notable differences from the MGM spectacular - like Dorothy's shoes, for example, which were never really ruby - but otherwise there are lots of instantly recognisable scenes and music which I hope our audiences will love. There's also a rather surprising Blair Witch pastiche."

Tickets for the Truro High School production of ‘The Wizard of Oz' cost £7 or £5 for concessions and can be purchased via the school reception on 01872 272830.
