Academic : Science

The science curriculum at Truro High School aims to establish an interest in the world around us and in the universe in general. It also aims to develop interest in scientific matters and issues concerning us all and in particular gives our students firm grounding in key scientific ideas and theories.

Students participate in a large amount of practical activities and take part in annual science trips, which enhances their experience of the subject. Excellent teaching by specialist staff further augments the quality of learning and teaching, which takes place in six up to date and well-equipped and resourced science laboratories. The Department is supported by qualified technicians and by a comprehensive supply of text- books, periodicals and journals.

Students are taught Biology, Chemistry and Physics as separate subjects through the Senior School, and we begin teaching Separate Science GSCE (OCR - Gateway B) from the spring term in year 9. All of our students study the three GCSE separate sciences at KS 4, with year 10 students taking their first modules in the June of that year.

Biology, Chemistry and Physics courses at AS and A2 level are popular choices for our students, with over half of the sixth form cohort studying at least one or two sciences at A level. Students follow the OCR specifications in Biology and Physics, and the Edexcel specification in Chemistry.
