Academic : Modern Languages

Considering a gap year in South America? Or a visit to the Munich Oktoberfest? Or even working a ski season in the Alps? So, how will you communicate?

"I speak English and everyone speaks English, so I don't have to learn a foreign language..."

Well, certainly not everyone speaks English. Only 5.6 % of the world's population speaks English as a first language. That number doubles when English as a second or third language are counted meaning that over 80% of the world do not speak English.

We firmly believe that learning a foreign language is an essential life skill. As well as making travel more feasible and enjoyable, you'll be able to step inside the mind and context of another culture and make new global friends. Languages also increase your employment potential and universities offer an extensive range of language courses combined with subjects as diverse as Criminology, International Relations, Engineering and Law.

Our exciting new Helford Language Centre offers girls the opportunity to learn French, German and Spanish to A Level. We offer our girls hands-on language experience: a Junior Linguists Club run by Sixth Formers in the Prep School, trips to France, Germany and Spain in the Senior School, work experience abroad in the Sixth Form, as well as hosting our own Foreign Film Club in-house, trips to the theatre and cinema and additional conversation practice for exam classes with our three native language assistants.

Languages are not just for holidays, but for life!

Hasta pronto! Bis bald! À bientôt!
