Academic : Learning Support
The Learning Support Department is an excellent resource. It is a comfortable, welcoming and friendly place to learn and is well placed for easy access to both Preparatory and Senior Schools. The staff are specially trained and qualified to provideassessments, extra teaching and support to pupils. This is mainly in literacy skills but help with numeracy is also available.
It is well understood at Truro High School that pupils with a specific learning difficulty, such as Dyslexia, benefit from structured, cumulative, multi sensory teaching methods with games, puzzles and computer software used to consolidate learning and provide ‘light relief'. We believe that if a pupil doesn't learn the way we teach, we need to teach the way she learns. Such pupils will need help not only with literacy skills but also with personal organisation and study skills like proof reading and examination techniques. We aim to equip our pupils with the skills they need to enable them to be as independent as possible in their learning over time.
Pupils, who may be in need of support, are assessed by one of our specialist tutors so to determine individual needs and inform parents of the level of help required. Individual Education Plans are prepared taking account of assessment results, pupil and parental views and suggestions from staff. These give teaching staff information and strategies to inform their teaching, and set targets for individual tuition within the Learning Support Department. Individual tuition, of up to an hour weekly, is free of charge for two years for both Prep pupils and Senior pupils. Any extra lessons or those required beyond the two year provision will incur a charge to parents.
The Learning Support Coordinator will always advise parents about issues to do with exam concessions such as extra time, particularly for the public examinations of GCSE and A Level.
The Department prides itself on being able to provide every opportunity for your daughter to reach her full potential, both academically and as a confident individual. We do this by early identification of need and by developing areas of weakness whilst teaching through her strengths.
