Academic : Latin and Classical Civilisation
JK Rowling, Chris Martin, Dido, Frank Lampard and JRR Tolkien - just a few Classics students! But why learn about the worlds of Ancient Greece and Rome? Well, because of genius, invention, sport, literature, philosophy, science, democracy, history, jaw-dropping architecture, mythology, love, language and so much more! It's fun, it's relevant to life today and it's taught at Truro High in a stimulating and enjoyable way. Latin is offered as a club in Prep 6 and Year 7 and then as part of the curriculum from Years 8 to 13, Classical Civilisation is offered in the Sixth Form and Ancient Greek is sometimes offered as an extra-curricular class to able and enthusiastic students. The Cambridge Latin Course is used up to GCSE. About half of the girls in Years 8 and 9 study the language, the lives of the citizens of Pompeii leading up to the eruption of Vesuvius, and Roman Britain. Girls who study Latin to GCSE expand their knowledge by studying original sources and inscriptions. They also read Latin literature in the original language. The transition to AS level is straightforward as all the essential grammar has been covered at GCSE. More complex and interesting texts are read including love poetry, mythological stories, political intrigue and the exploits of wicked emperors such as Nero.
Classical Civilisation is a very wide-ranging subject encompassing art, literature, drama and history. All texts are read in translation so no knowledge of Latin and Greek is expected or required. The AS modules are Greek Tragedy and Homer's Odyssey and at A2, Greek Art and Architecture and Roman Epic. By studying the great and influential writing, sculpture and architecture of the ancient world, our Sixth Formers encounter and enthusiastically and energetically discuss ideas and concepts which are fundamental to our own culture.
We use the OCR examination specifications for all qualifications and have a strong success rate in preparing girls for degrees at Oxbridge and the Russell group of universities.
