Academic : Geography

We all know how important it is to have a sense of place and curiosity in the world around us. And our girls, the future decision makers of this world, will need geographical knowledge to strive to improve our moral, political and economic status in a world of complex cultural and environmental relationships.

Geography fosters this understanding of the relationships between people and their environment and the physical processes that have shaped the landscape. The subject provides the background knowledge to allow local, national and global events - experienced at first hand or through the media - to be placed in context and evaluated critically.

In Years 7-9 the girls study the causes and responses to flooding, volcanoes and earthquakes, globalisation of industry, population growth and resource management and development and inequalities. They learn how to map read, investigate, present, analyse and interpret data as well as write reports.

At GCSE the AQA Specification ‘A' is followed and currently the topics studied are tectonics, rivers, coasts, tourism, population change and the Development Gap.

At ‘A' level the OCR Specification is used and currently the topics studied are glaciation, coasts, deserts, managing rural environment, tourism and energy issues, development and global inequalities, ecosystems and hazardous environments together with the theory of geographical investigations.

As the old adage says ‘Geography is everywhere' and at Truro High School we aim to prove this in a fun and thought-provoking way!
