Academic : English

From 'The Pied Piper' and 'Skellig' in Year 7 and progressing onwards to 'The Winter's Tale' and 'Small Island' in the Sixth Form, our girls will enjoy a wide range of literary experiences. Using texts such as these as a source of inspiration, we aim to encourage the girls' creativity and broaden their understanding of themselves and the world in which they live.

In Years 7 to 9 girls will learn to write to accurately in a variety of styles for different audiences. We emphasise the importance of correct spelling, punctuation and grammar whilst nurturing their imaginative responses. Girls will have opportunities to express themselves in drama and through discussion as well as in writing.

At GCSE all girls sit the higher tier papers in both English Language and Literature, following the AQA B specifications. Our students are fully- supported, working in differentiated sets, enabling them to develop all the skills required to achieve their full potential.

"A" level studies give our students a wonderful opportunity to expand their literary horizons and become independent, critical thinkers. The emphasis is on developing skills which will be vital to studies in further education. All girls follow AQA English Literature, Specification B, covering all three literary genres and including the production of coursework.

The students' academic work is supported by an exciting and varied range of extra-curricular activities, from a Jane Austen study day in Bath to competing in the Cambridge Inter-schools Debating Competition. During the school day girls can join a book club, help to write and edit the school magazine or simply enjoy the peace of a quiet read in the extensive school library - and so much more!
